Why Radar System Demands 400Hz AC Power Supply: One Vietnam Case Study
Hey everyone,
As a electric engineer, a common question I get is, “Why do radar and aviation avionics need 400Hz ac power?” It’s not just a preference—it’s a fundamental requirement for performance.
The truth is like this: higher frequency allows the components like transformers and motors to be significantly smaller in size and lighter in weight. This is quite critical for the precision and rapid response needed in radar systems. These radar systems can suffer from inaccurate data and hardware damage without clean, stable 400Hz AC power, .
We’ve been implemented one project for a radar station in Vietnam. The utility power supply is 50Hz three phase 380V, but the new radar system required a robust 400Hz power supply. The challenge was providing not just the frequency change, but also super clean power with minimal harmonic distortion to reduce interference as much as possible. The 400 hertz converters was used by the Surveillance and Reconnaissance Division for testing various radar systems. It is important that these systems produce a non-linear load, and that requires the frequency converter to be complied with MIL-STD-704 and IEC standard.

Our team designed and installed a solid-state frequency converter that delivered:
Precise Conversion: 50Hz to 400Hz power transformation.
Less Harmonic Distortion: Input THDi<5%
Pure Sine Wave Output: Exceptionally low harmonic distortion, output THD <2%.
Voltage Stability: Voltage Stability 1% in line regulation and in load regulation.
Enclosures/Cabinets: The 400 hertz converter enclosures is of a structurally sound design that provide for absolute rigidity and provide protection to both the electrical equipment inside and the personnel working in the areas nearby during operation.
The 400 hertz converter output 0-208 volts, 3 phase, 400 hertz (Wye and Delta configuration) capable of running under input power at 320V-480V, 3 phase 50Hz-60Hz. It has the overload ability with 100% continuously,200% for 20 seconds, 300% for 5 seconds, and 400% for 1 second.
The result? The end-user reported: radars running perfectly with no malfunction. They were particularly satisfied with the system’s reliability and versatile functions.
Major player? For mission-critical systems like radar, a high-quality 400Hz frequency converter isn’t an accessory—it’s the core of operational integrity. If your project involves avionics, radar, or military systems, choosing the right conversion technology is the first step to success.
